Workshops

Description

CRAFT’s workshop program ran from 2017 to 2022 and provided hands-on, accessible learning experiences that connected culinary skills with food systems knowledge. Hosted both in-person at Chatham University’s Eden Hall Campus and virtually, these workshops brought together community members and local food industry professionals to build skills, explore new ideas, and strengthen regional food systems.

Workshops spanned a wide range of topics, with frequently featured classes including sourdough bread baking, fermentation techniques, and whole-animal butchery.

Impact

Over the course of the program, CRAFT hosted more than 130 workshops and welcomed over 1,100 participants. Revenue generated from the program supported more than 10 graduate students through work-study positions and internships, contributing to CRAFT’s experiential learning model.

While CRAFT no longer hosts workshops in this format, the program has evolved into an annual “Workshop Day.” This initiative trains local business owners to design and lead their own workshops as a strategy for diversifying income. Participants then host their workshops during a single, community-focused event at Eden Hall, offering a low-stakes environment to pilot new classes and engage with audiences.
