WOMEN OF COLOR WORKING IN GRAIN

Thursday, November 5th, 2PM EST

Globally, women have a long history in farming, baking, and brewing. For instance, alewife was a term of distinction in communities historically and women who bake and farm wield power in food distribution. Today, farming, baking and brewing are rife with many of the same hierarchies we see throughout public food (where chefs with fame and economic benefits are generally white men and organizations that reward and promote artisanal food operate as gatekeepers for representation and engagement by women, awarding them in gender-based categories). What does it look like to claim the gendered heritage in these fields while moving into a more inclusive and intersectional future in the grains industry?
